The award was presented by American director Oliver Stone.
Asghar Farhadi said, “I remember, that was thirty-six years ago. I was thirteen years old and had made my first short film with the resources I had available. As American actress and director Jodie Foster was awarded the Honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony on May 6, Italian director Marco Bellocchio was awarded this evening’s award in recognition of his exceptional career.
The trophy was presented to him by Paolo Sorrentino.
Marco Bellocchio said: “I would like to share this award with all the people who are part of my film family. I am very touched. I am very happy that you remembered Michele Piccoli with whom you worked. He and Anouk Emmy won the acting award for Leap in the Dark” ( Le Saut dans le vide) in 1979.
